Background

Built in 2001 to celebrate the millennium and 20 years of our family living here. It was a family effort with the hard graft done by one of our sons who was embarking on a career as an architect. It replaced an unsightly string of derelict outbuildings used in the past for furniture restoration. There was evidence of an older building and some remains suggested the possibility of a cloister in medieval times. Hence the name.

Much of the building materials were sourced from the land at Fyfield including the flint used in some of the interior walls and the tree used for the stair case. The emphasis was to reflect the importance of the environmental impact in the 21st century. The roof is lined with the most efficient insulation available at the time, double glazed throughout with a 99% efficient boiler and underground tanks to harvest the rain water. At present all the south facing roofs are being covered with solar panels which will provide much of the electricity for the whole building.

Externally the building captures the feel of the medieval period and blends in with the walled garden which gives complete privacy to guests.

Ground floor –

It is open plan giving a feeling of light and space. The south west wall is completely glazed with carved oak mullions supporting the windows and overlooks the walled garden. The study area is situated here and we provide free connection to broadband and a bespoke work table. Ideal for the business person.

The beautiful kitchen has every amenity for modern living and its crowning glory is the blue pearl granite work surface. It is a great sociable area to cook in.

A yew tree which had to be cut down has been used to create a stunning and unique centrepiece and staircase for the room.

The sitting area is partly enclosed by a flint and brick wall and the large leather corner suite offers a comfortable and cosy area to relax in front of the 52” around sound TV system. The solid white oak floors accentuate the modern light feel of the area.
